Treatment and different ways of how people battle with depression

  • Anti-depressants are most commonly taken up by people. They are known to improve certain chemicals that the brain uses to control mood or stress. And usually, these medications take up to 3-4 weeks to kick in and show improvement in your behaviour. and these are to be taken up and stopped only after proper medical consultation.
  • Psychotherapy- These are like talk therapies or aa form of counselling for the patients where they can talk about what’s bothering them and how they are feeling and share their feelings with their consultant. And take up the ways they can deal with their problems.
  • Brain Stimulation Therapy- This treatment is taken up when the medication and other treatments are not working. TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)- it is aa non-invasive treatment in which the magnetic fields are used to stimulate the nerves in the brain to deal with depression. It lasts for up to 30-40 minutes. And is received by the patient for 5 days a week. Typically, lasting for 3-4 weeks.

Some of the clinics offering the treatment are:

  • Neuroscience & TMS Treatment Center (US)
  • Mayo Clinic (American center having its claim at various locations)

These above-mentioned TMS treatment clinics have some of the well-experienced doctors that have studied in this field and carried out this treatment various times.

How does the treatment work?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that is used to treat various disorders and one of them is depression. This procedure uses a magnetic field so that it stimulates the nerve cells present in the brain intending to improve the symptoms of depression. And this procedure is taken into consideration only when all the other medications are unresponsive or ineffective in the treatment. During the session, an electromagnetic coil is used that is placed against the scalp near the forehead and a series of the magnetic pulse are delivered to the brain painlessly, which helps in stimulating the nerves in the brain that are responsible in mood control and depression. So this activates the part of the brain that has decreased its activity due to depression. This procedure is carried out only after the doctor tests out your limit to what extent the patient can handle the magnetic fields. And during the process, it feels like someone is tapping our head and a session usually lasts for up to 30-40 minutes. And it costs up to 25 thousand dollars for the complete course.
